Shoeing & Trimming Schools

These schools have been developed for people whose circumstances require them to shoe or trim their own horses, usually those in regional and remote areas where it is quite often not possible for people to have their horse shod or trimmed by a qualified professional. By providing an outline of the fundamental principles of good farriery and dispelling popular myths, we aim to improve the comfort, performance and overall welfare of their horses.

Shoeing schools are most commonly held over two days and are primarily aimed toward individuals who have some experience trimming and nailing to feet. However, on occasion when beginners have attended, they have found the experience valuable and made great progress in the time available.

We cover both theory, and hands-on skills in two very full days. People that have done some shoeing before will usually shoe two horses by the end of the two days. Those with less experience may complete one horse. Everyone is starting from a different place, so progress is relative to the individual.

Schools are aimed at increasing efficiency – becoming quicker, while at the same time doing a better job.

Participants achieve this by:

  • learning how to recognise patterns found in feet in order to simplify the trimming process; and by removing the mystery and guesswork from shoe shaping.
  • working with a plan that allows for self-evaluation and improvement of successive shoeing jobs.

Trimming Schools usually follow a one-day format. Shoeing Schools are normally held over two days. We also offer hot-shoeing schools by arrangement, which will require three days to cover the additional skills.

In all my schools, there is an emphasis placed on soundness of the horses and safety of people and horses through good horsemanship.

Schools are organised on an as needed basis. If you are interested, get in contact and we can discuss the possibility of arranging a shoeing or trimming school near you. Generally, all we need is a venue and suggestions of where to advertise in your local area and sharing the event online to your local connections. We will do the rest.

“Another 4 full trims done today with a lot more confidence and I feel like I’m starting to get a much clearer feel for what I’m looking for in my end product! I’ve done 10 trims since you left – that’s my clinic fees paid for itself! There’s a wonderful feeling knowing I’ve not only achieved it for myself but also saved $” – Hawkesdale Clinic, Victoria 2022
